As it is in most other MMO games, the basic idea of World of Warcraft is to create a character, and use
that character to explore the world, combat monsters, villains, and other players, and become more powerful through
gaining levels and collecting new and powerful items. On a basic level, it’s very simple, but it’s also incredibly
addictive. It’s easy to get caught up playing WoW for hours.
Once you’ve installed the game and set up your game account, the first thing that you must do is choose a server
type. There are basically two different types of servers: PvE, or player vs. environment, and PvP, or player vs.
player. A PvE server is for people who don’t want to engage in combat with other players unless both parties
actively choose to.
A PvP server is a no-hold-barred free for all where no one is safe. You can also choose an RP, or role playing,
server of either type. RP servers are for people who want to truly immerse themselves in the game world and create
characters with their own unique personalities rather than just an avatar of the player.
The next step is to create a character. There are currently 10 races and 10 classes to choose from, each with
unique abilities. Your class plays a more important role in gameplay than your race, but both are important
decisions.
The races are divided up into two factions: the Alliance and the Horde. The Alliance races are the humans, dwarves, gnomes, night elves, and
draenei. The Horde consists of the orcs, trolls, tauren, forsaken, and blood elves.
While the Horde consists of character racse that are
classically considered “bad guys,” neither faction in the game is truly good or truly evil. The Alliance represents
a more traditional fantasy adventure, while the Horde has more of a “savage frontier” feel to it. While both
factions start out isolated from each other, they eventually come to converge in the same areas – sometimes working
together against a greater threat, and sometimes working against each other.

Your class will determine your role in the game. Every class in the game is capable of reaching the maximum level
completely solo, but some classes are more tailored toward play with a group. Once you’ve reached the end game,
your role becomes much more important, so choose wisely.
The three roles are tank, healer, and damage dealer. In group settings, tanks are the ones responsible for keeping
the attention of enemy monsters and takes big hits that would kill other players. Healers are responsible for
casting spells to restore the health of the tank and other party members. Finally, damage dealers are the ones who
put out the most damage to bring the monsters down as quickly as possible.
Once you’ve created your character, it’s time to enter the World of Warcraft. As soon as you log in, you’ll be treated to a
short intro about your character’s race, and then you can get into the action. There’s a lot to learn about the
game, but don’t get intimidated – the basics are pretty easy and there are lots of resources out there to help you
understand the finer points of game.
